As a result of the restructuring plan approved by the 13th National People’s Congress, China’s top IP administration was renamed from State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO) to China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) on August 29, 2018. The domain name of the official website is now http://www.cnipa.gov.cn/
The CNIPA is no longer a subordinate under the State Council, but under the supervision of the newly established State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration.
Furthermore, the CNIPA has expanded its administrative responsibility from solely patent operations to covering trademarks and geographical indications of origins. The organizational changes are also aimed at strengthening and harmonizing the management and enforcement of intellectual property rights by bringing them under integrated supervision.
